Converse Public Safety Justice
Center/Council Chamber& Municipal Courtroom
17,800 SF, City of Converse Justice Center
Owner: City of Converse
Architect: Burns Fletcher Gill Architects
Method of Delivery: CM-at-Risk
Start/Completion: 03/05 - 12/05

The City of Converse Justice Center houses the Police Department, Municipal Court and City Council Chambers. Doubling the size of the previous justice center, the new facility is directly across the street from its old home in the City Hall building. Located on a 100 year flood plain, there had to be a five (5) foot build up and 103 piers were cast in place to allow for drainage underneath the facility.

The site, once home to a local dance hall, had to be demolished before the new construction began. The city decided to preserve part of the dance hall floor and had it placed in the City Council Chambers, which also doubles the Municipal Courtroom. The floor had to be refinished and re-stained after being placed back into the new facility. The new Council Chambers allows seating for up to 250 people unlike the old facility that allowed seating for only 55 people.

The Police Department contains 6 detention cells with provisions for full time dispatch capabilities and is able to house 52 officers at full capacity. The facility was not only constructed for their current needs, but also for future growth. The Police Department side of the facility also contains an Interrogation Room, full kitchen/training room and a small weight room/gym facility. There is also an area designed and in place for Emergency Operation Center once the city has funded the project.
