Science Labs for NEISD
Science Labs for NEISD
20,000 SF, New science classroom wings & renovation to existing facilities
Owner: North East ISD
Architect: Garza/Bomberger & Associates
Method of Delivery: CSP
Start/Completion: 09/05 - 06/07

One of the final projects of the 2003 North East ISD Bond Program, the Science Lab addition projects add a science lab building to eight (8) middle schools throughout the school district. Middle schools receiving the science lab additions include; Bradley Middle School, Eisenhower Middle School, Garner Middle School, Jackson Middle School, Krueger Middle School, Nimitz Middle School, White Middle School and Wood Middle School. This project called for some renovation and upgrading work at Driscoll Middle School. Each addition will have stand alone Mechanical systems, including new HVAC systems and chiller up-grades. Each addition also required up-grading the storm drain and storm water retention systems, in order to bring them up to current code.

Seven (7) of the eight (8) middle schools have a 1-story addition containing eight (8) lab/classrooms per addition. Each classroom is equipped with case work, demonstration fume hoods, state of the art data line hubs, television and computer connections, shower, eyewash and acid neutralization capabilities. In each Science Lab Classroom, there is an epoxy teaching demonstration table that has a computer, VCR & DVD capabilities and video projector built into the table itself. Each room is also equipped with a ceiling mounted projector with a screen mounted to an interior wall in the room.

There were several challenges that were faced throughout the project. All 8 additions occurred on occupied campuses. Temporary parking was created on most project sites because of the construction. Also, because the bus loop runs through most of the addition construction sites, twice a day (drop-off and pick-up) the construction site is blocked off to allow for bus traffic. Finally, on two (2) of the sites, large retaining wall foundation systems were built because there was substantial site grading.

The stained concrete floors will allow for lower maintenance for owner for years to come.

Hays CISD took the savings and put it back into the project. Several major upgrades were made to the competition football field including a competition running track, football field bleachers and outdoor stadium lighting.
